Famous Places for Viewing Cherry Blossoms in Japan

In Japan, the blossoming of cherry trees signals the end of winter and the birth of spring. Although the season for cherry blossoms (sakura) can vary from year to year, it usually begins in Okinawa around the end of January, travels through Kyushu and Honshu from the middle of March and into April and reaches Hokkaido by early May.

In spring, about 1,200 cherry trees bloom around Hikone Castle, and the Castle has its most beautiful season in the year.

Cherry blossoms are in full bloom around April 8 each year, so in early April many people enjoy the cherry blossoms even at night.
During the period, the areas along the inner moat of Hikone Castle: Genkyu-en, Front Gate, Otebashi Bridge, and Kyobashi Bridge are decorated with lights.

Kawazu-zakura Cherry Blossom Festival
February 5 - March 10, 2012

The Kawazu cherry blossoms, called "Kawazu-zakura" in Japanese, bloom from early February through early March, for about a month. The Kawazu cherry trees have the characteristic of large pink flowers. The lines of the cherry trees,"Kawazu-zakura Namiki", continue along the Kawazu River for about 2.49mile(4km), starting from the river month near the Kawazu Station to Mine Onsen. Despite the cold weather, one million people visit Kawazu during the period of one month to enjoy the biggest event of the town.
