Hiking in Nikko with Japanese high school students!

"Enjoy hiking in Nikko, a World Heritage Site, with local high schoolers who will serve as volunteer guides!"

Nikko is where you will find many historic buildings in almost every place such as the two shrines and a temple (Nikko Toshogu, Nikko Futarasan Jinja, Nikko Rinnoji) which have collectively been designated a World Heritage Site as well as the Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park built as Emperor Taisho's retreat when he was a crown prince. Additionally, Nikko is also blessed with a magnificent natural environment Therefore, it is known both at home and abroad as a major tourist spot. It is especially famous for its beautiful crimson foliage in autumn when tourists can discover scenery that is utterly amazing.

A hiking plan has been created that includes roads used everyday as school routes by local high schoolers who live in Nikko and attend school in the region as well as narrow paths known for long by residents in the neighborhood in the course. As a free event titled "Eki kara Hiking" planned out by high schoolers and operated by JR East, it will be launched on November 14. On the day of the tour, the students will pick up the participants and offer a number of activities such as Japanese tea ceremony by Tea Ceremony Club students clad in kimono (charged). Additionally, English Club students and their teachers will act as English-speaking tour guides, taking you to the various famous spots of Nikko along the hiking course. Course maps made by high schoolers will also be provided.

While experiencing Japanese traditions and unique qualities of the country, this event will also give you the best opportunity to get to know Japanese high schoolers. Please join us!

Date: November 14, 2009; free admission. On the day of the tour, participants will be asked to meet at Nikko Station on the JR Nikko line (transportation fee to Nikko Station will be covered by the participants). Reservations are accepted until November 11, 2009 (Wed). The admission desk on the day of the tour will be opened from 9:00am to 11:00am. The tour will take about 3.5 hours. Presents will be given to all prior applicants. Please enjoy hiking while following the English route map.

*Fees are required for some of the facilities along the hiking course. You will have to pay admission when entering such places. Recommended tickets to Nikko (if using the bullet train and Nikko line or JR/Tobu direct express) are JR EAST PASS and JR EAST PASS SPECIAL (limited sales period).
