At the foot of Shiga Kogen Heights is the Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Wild Monkey Park) where one can observe wild Japanese monkeys in an unbelievably close proximity. The Park is located in the valley, about 30 minutes away on foot from the Museum.
One day, perhaps to survive the extreme freezing conditions, these wild Japanese monkeys started bathing in hot springs. For the monkeys this is the northernmost living environment and their life in snow has been moving photographers to capture them on films. Striking images of monkeys captured in the snow, as soon as they are presented, have been creating profound repercussions in the world. Wild Japanese monkeys that daily visit the Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Wild Monkey Park) are since known to the world as "Snow Monkeys" and have become a huge international attraction.
This "Snow Monkey Photo Exhibit Vol.II" is our second attempt to introduce images captured by photographers who frequent the Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Wild Monkey Park). We will be presenting approximately 100 photographs which, we believe, will be able to convey to you the beauty and strength of Snow Monkeys in their elements.
