Baseball Fever in Japan

In light of the victory of Edogawa-minami (South Edo River) Little League, a representative of Japan, at Little League World Series held in Pennsylvania in August, the strength, popularity and broad base of support enjoyed by the sport of baseball again has come into the limelight.

In Japan, amateur baseball especially high school baseball is very popular among men and women of all ages. When thinking of Japanese amateur baseball Koshien stadium, in Hyogo near Osaka, comes to mind. Tournaments are held at Koshien, which also doubles as the Hanshin Tiger's home field, during spring and fall.

This summer, Konan high school, a representative of Okinawa Prefecture overpowered other teams, toppeing 4,028 other high school teams of the nation.
Konan became the 6th school in Japanese high school baseball history to win both the national invitational tourney in the spring and the summer championship in the same year. Yosuke Shimabukuro, ace pitcher of Konan, is known for great fastball over 90 miles per hour, well-controlled various breaking-balls with kind of "tornado" pitching style.

Okinawa, the most southern part of Japan where Konan high school is based is very popular destination among not only Japanese but foreign tourists for extraordinary beautiful beaches, unique and rich cultures. If you have a chance to visit Japan, do not hesitate to extend your itinerary to the beautiful islands. Perhaps while there you could find out the secret of strength Konan High baseball!
