Nebuta & Neputa Festival

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri: August 2nd-7th
Hirosaki Neputa Matsuri: August 1st-7th

With the recent comppletion of Shinkansen Bullet Train extention in December 2010, Aomori Prefecture (the northernmost part of Japanese Main Island) is one of the hottest places to visit this year. The area is known for its spectacular summer festivals, Nebuta & Neputa Festivals.

Although the names are a little different, the words "Nebuta" and "Neputa" mean basically the same things. Bamboo and wooden frames are covered with paper illustrated with historic figures and pictures of samurai warriors along with birds and beasts. These are illuminated from inside and set up on yatai floats and cars which proceed in the Aomori parade.

Although the festivals organized in Aomori and Hirosaki are especially well known, Nebuta and Neputa Festivals are held in many places in Aomori Prefecture in various ways. In Goshogawara City, for example, they set up taller figures called Tachi-Neputa, or standing Neputa, which are as high as 70 feet.
