Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, held in Niigata Prefecture, is the largest international contemporary art festival in Japan, and is holding its fifth triennale from July 29th - Sept. 17th, 2012.

Since its inception in 2000, the number of participating artists has grown to 360 from more than 44 countries and regions in 2012.  Artists, both individuals and groups, as well as cultural organizations from all over the world come to participate in the art festival whose goal is to help revitalize the Echigo-Tsumari area in Niigata Prefecture which suffers from a damaging earthquake in 2004, and by a significant loss of the local young population to larger cities. The Triennale uses art as a voice to reveal and communicate the rural beauty of the landscape and other natural assets of Echigo-Tsumari area in Niigata. Many projects and workshops in the areas have led to collaborations between artists from all corners of the globe, and have also involved the local people in bringing new life to the area they call home. Many of the artworks remain in place during the triennials, welcoming visitors whenever they arrive.
