Tokyo & Kyoto 2013 Marathons

In 2013, both Tokyo and Kyoto will once again host marathons. The 2013 Tokyo Marathon is scheduled for February 24, 2013. Official entry application begins August 1, 2012 and authorized runners will be selected by a lottery.

The Kyoto Marathon is scheduled for March 10, 2013. Information regarding entry and course will be announced on the official website early August, and entry application begins in late August.

The Tokyo Marathon, which started in 2007, has become one of the largest city events for Tokyo. Last year alone saw 300,000 people apply for the positions of only 36, 000 runners, and two million spectators made there way to the capital. The Tokyo marathon hosts both full general and wheelchair marathons, and general and handicapped 10K marathons.

The marathon route begins at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, then winds through the Imperial Palace, Zojoji Temple by Shiba Park, the Ginza, Nihonbashi and Asakusa to its final destination at Tokyo Big Sight.

Specific information regarding the 2013 sign-up will be posted shortly in their English website. Entries can be made via Internet. Overseas entry fee is 12,000 yen.

Kyoto is hosting its second marathon, the first one taking place one year after the devastating earthquake that rocked northeastern Japan in 2011. The 2013 marathon is also routed through the city, via a path rich in cultural and historical locations including several World Cultural Heritage Sites. Details will be available here. Information on the 2013 marathon will be posted in early August.
