Find out more about the location and prefecture, city or town where your ancestor emigrated from

  • Ask your grandparents/parents or relatives
  • Try searching for an old passport or documents issued by the Japanese Government (such as “koseki”, Japanese family registry) to find the correct name and address.
Note that some individuals adopted western “nicknames” upon arrival to the new country of residence.
  • You can narrow down the search if you have access to information on which ship they were on and the date of departure from Japan.

Visit the hometown, city, or prefecture of your ancestor

  • Organize your own visit, have a travel agency customize a program for you, or participate in the group tours organized by different Kenjinkai’s
    and other organizations.
  • Consult with JNTO if you can’t define the exact place of your ancestral heritage with the information you obtained. Sometimes the address shown in the “koseki” or any other documents, can’t be found. For inquiry, E-mail the address to info@jnto-lax.org
