10 millionth Visitor Arrived Japan

New York, NY, December 23, 2013: Japan welcomed the 10 millionth international visitor at Narita International Airport of Tokyo on Friday, December 20. This is the very important milestone of 2013 for Japan tourism, as the Japan Travel Agency (JTA) and Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) have set the goal to invite 10 million visitors in 2013.

The 10 millionth visitors to Japan were a Thai couple arrived from Bangkok; Mr. Praphan Pha Tra Prasit and Mrs. Yu Pha Da Pha Tra Prasit. They were both welcomed with a commemorative plate and a gift presented by Mr. Akihiro Ota, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism at the airport, followed by the special ceremony.

JNTO President Mr. Ryoichi Matsuyama announced his welcome to the couple, expressing his wish to offer heartfelt appreciation to those who have helped Japan tourism. As JNTO's mission is to realize a "tourism-based" nation with expanded inbound tourism, it is important to achieve the dream to reach the goal. (see here for his complete statement)

Since the launch of the Visit Japan campaign in 2003, it took a long time to achieve 10 million visitors to Japan. In light of various factors including the global economic recession, the currency exchange rate in favor of the Japanese Yen, and the natural disaster in 2011, this achievement became even more special to the Japanese tourism industry. Now that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in sight, JTA and JNTO are looking forward to further development of Japan tourism infrastructure and many more visitors to Japan in the coming years.
