TOKYO IN FINAL SELECTION AS HOST CITY FOR 2016 OLYMPICS

New York City, New York. October 21, 2008 – Still fresh from the breathtaking closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, Tokyo is already actively preparing as one of the top four candidate cities for the 2016 summer Olympic Games.   In August 2008, Tokyo was accepted by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board as one of the final candidate cities for the 2016 Games. The other three cities competing for the bid are Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.

Vibrant Tokyo promotes modern urban culture built upon proud traditions and heritage, as well as a variety of cityscapes including beaches, mountains, hiking trails and parks, all within a short train ride.

Tokyo’s overall Olympic plan is very unique.  The city will facilitate all venues within a 10 mile diameter except for football and shooting venues. The key message on the 2016 bid will highlight Japan’s direction to be an environmentally conscious country.

Japan has a history of being a first-choice country to host both the summer and winter Olympic Games. In 1964, Tokyo had the honor of hosting the first ever Asian-based Olympics. The winter Olympics were celebrated twice in Japan – 1972 in Sapporo and 1998 in Nagano.

The winning city to host in 2016 will be selected on October 2, 2009.
